How Do I Use Zoom?

Many of the Club’s events over the coming months are on Zoom, the video conferencing software that has become so popular since the start of the pandemic. If you would like to take part in one of the Club events but have not used Zoom before, here are the key things you need to know.

Your Device

You can use Zoom on a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone – it just needs to have a screen and sound. If it is an interactive event, you may need a camera and microphone as well (which are normally part of your device anyway).

The Zoom Link Details

All lead bookers will receive an email with a Zoom link, and any required password to access the online meeting, at least one working day before the event date. Click on this and follow the instructions on the screen to ‘Join a Meeting’.

If you do not already have Zoom installed on your device, it will be downloaded and installed now. In some cases, you may have to enter a Meeting ID and password which will have been provided.

Installing Zoom Beforehand

If you want to install Zoom in advance of the event, or to use it for other meetings beforehand:

  • on a desktop or laptop, go to zoom.us, click on ‘sign up’ (top right of the screen), then follow the instructions
  • on a tablet or smartphone go to the App Store, search for the Zoom App and install it.

You only need to install Zoom once, not for each meeting or event.

Joining an Event

Click on the link in the email you receive with the Zoom details included, and install Zoom if you do not have it already. Next, a video preview window will pop up. Click ‘Join with Video’, then click ‘Join with Computer Audio’ when the ‘Join Audio’ window pops up.

At this point you should be able to see and hear the host of the event. You may be held in a ‘waiting room’ if the event has not started yet.

If you cannot hear or see the event, make sure your video and microphone icons do not have a red line through them. Click the icon and the red line should disappear and you will have video and sound.

Try It Out

If you want to see what Zoom looks like and give it a try, go to zoom.us/test and you can join a test meeting.
