Rules of Golf (R&A), Rule 3.3b – Scoring
Players have specific responsibilities to ensure competitions are conducted fairly and accurately.
Each player is responsible for their own score. During the round, the marker records the player’s gross score for each hole, but it is the player’s duty to ensure those scores are correct, including the application of any penalties.
After the round, the player must carefully check the hole-by-hole scores, confirm they are accurate, and ensure the scorecard is properly certified. This requires the marker to certify the scores, and the player to confirm and submit the card in line with the competition conditions (including digital scorecards where in use).
Once a scorecard has been returned, it is considered final. Returning a scorecard with a score lower than actually taken on any hole results in disqualification. If a higher score is returned, the higher score will stand.
Taking time to review and submit a correct, attested scorecard is a key responsibility of every player and is essential to maintaining the integrity of the competition.
