Varsity Chess Match and Dinner

Varsity Chess Match and Dinner

Pall Mall
Saturday 7 March

The Club is hosting the 144th Varsity Chess Match, also known as The Boat Race for the Brains, on Saturday 7 March at Pall Mall. The Club has hosted this event since 1978 and it is the world’s longest established and continuous chess match. This is a Club event and is open to all members and guests.

Viewing the Match
For members interested in chess at any level, this is a great opportunity to ‘drop-in’ and observe live, top-class chess, Grandmaster commentary and witness a thrilling and unpredictable sporting spectacle.

There is no need to book and you are welcome to simply look in, however it would be helpful if members interested in spectating could register their attendance by emailing the Activities Team.

Reception and Dinner
Recover in the evening with a black tie dinner where the Margaret Pugh Trophy will be awarded to the winning captain. Members and guests are invited to attend the dinner where we will hear from both team captains and from some of the UK’s leading Grandmasters with their observations of the day's play.
