Maria Costello, MBE is one of the most prominent women in motorcycle road racing and the only female motorcycle racer ever to be awarded an MBE. She has achieved unrivalled success in a high-risk world, competing on equal terms with men in a sport renowned as the ultimate test for competitor and machine. Maria was the first woman to stand on the podium at the notorious Isle of Man TT– often described as the world’s most dangerous race – and held the female lap record around the TT course for five years. She also claimed third and was the first woman to stand on the podium in a Classic TT. These are just three of the many accolades accorded to her over a 20-year career (a feat in itself!).
She is the only racer to hold the female lap record at all three International Road Races: the Isle of Man TT Races, the Vauxhall International Northwest 200, and the Ulster Grand Prix.
Maria made history on both the ‘Mark Coverdale’ Paton SC1 Supertwin and her LCR F2 Kawasaki sidecar at this year’s Isle of Man TT races when she became the first woman to compete in both a solo TT race and a sidecar TT race. Due to the events being disrupted by bad weather, both races took place on the same day.
