‘The car was bought from Sargeants [car dealership] of Goudhurst on the 8th August 1998. I am the fourth owner and have owned the car for 21 years. It is now 50 years old, first registered 31st January 1969. The car has air conditioning from new, the earlier Series 1 dashboard, 6.23 litre VH engine, the original Radiomobile, is one of the last Series 1 with hydraulic self-levelling height control front and rear and one of the first three speed automatics. Finding a service engineer was my first task.
After the first service I started the car at home and oil flooded out from the sump. Since then Nigel Sandel has carefully serviced the car. The temperature gauge sometimes says the engine is over heating, otherwise the car runs smoothly. The coachwork is Silver Sand with an Everflex roof fitted in 1973.
The exterior is in good condition, the bonnet and boot have a particularly good lustre. The interior is excellent.
The factory original Connolly leather is near to its original colour and fed every year. The dashboard is Chippendale. The rear has folding picnic tables and original wedge shaped foot rests. The odometer mileage of 71937 is genuine based on the car’s provenance. The engine is original. The PNDLR Quadrant is white with black letters.
Normally it is black with white letters. The Spirit of Ecstasy has an electric alarm. The suspension and sub frame are in good condition. I fitted a new petrol tank, fuel hoses and electronic ignition.
On the 27th April 2002 the car was number 26 of 100 Rolls-Royces and Bentleys when we drove past Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in The Quadrant of Windsor Castle in tribute to the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
A big occasion was The Spirit of Ecstasy Centenary Drive on the 6th February 2011 though the West End of London. We passed the birthplace of Charles Rolls and the studio where Charles Sykes created his famous Spirit of Ecstasy. A great pleasure when opening the June 2011 Bulletin was to see on page five a photograph of my car passing Harrods during the drive.’ [Michael Weaving’s words, 17-Aug-19]
