Through The Lens: An Exhibition of Vintage and Contemporary Photography
Friday 11 September to Friday 30 October
Photographer David Lewin covered Grand Prix for Modern Motor Magazine during the period 1957 to 1961. The Modern Motor was owned by Australian Consolidated Press and had offices in Fleet Street, London.
David was born in London in 1932. Moving with his family to Sydney when he was a child. His hobby, as he got older, was motor sport and he went rallying. He was a founder member of the North Shore Sporting Car Club, now said to be the most prestigious in Australia and became great friends with David McKay, Australia’s first professional racing driver.
On alternate weekends he flew to Europe to professionally photograph Grand Prix for Modern Motor Magazine. In the 1950s monochrome photographs were required for publication but, as colour had just come in, he took colour transparencies for future interest. David left photography as a profession in the mid-1960s to pursue a career in dentistry.
This selection of 8 monochrome photographs are from a much larger David Lewin archive that has been published for the first time by Historic Car Art. Other than the photographs used in the magazines in period, none of these photographs have ever been seen before.
Rachel Shuler, of MTS Drive, is a commercial and fine art photographer based in New England USA.
She came to photography later in life, from a background in graphic design and metal arts. While studying fine art photography in San Francisco, she became involved in photographing the annual Danville Concours event, and it was this which began her love of automotive photography.
Her own artistic viewpoint soon developed towards examining each car as though it were landscape or sculpture. She brought her fascination with the abstract to studying how each individual contour interacts with light and with its environment. Rachel still enjoys the energy of automotive events and the precision of location and detail photography, however her personal work now focuses largely on minimalist, abstract art. Her work is sold exclusively through Historic Car Art in the UK.
