Review: A Spring Drive to Cornwall

Described as the jewel in the crown of the Roseland Peninsula, members arrived in St Mawes excited about the trip to the Cornish coast, and a little bit of rain wasn’t going to dampen their moods. The Idle Rocks Hotel was reserved exclusively for the Club’s weekend visit by its owner, David Richards CBE, a Club member and the current Chairman of Prodrive.

Friday
Upon arrival guests were shown to their rooms which looked out over the quaint village of the picturesque St Mawes Bay. All were treated to a cream tea on arrival in the hotel lounge and were free to begin exploring the charming local area, with many opting for a seaside stroll. In the evening guests enjoyed a drinks reception in the lounge where they could taste some of the restaurant’s signature drinks before dinner in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant.

Saturday
After breakfast at the hotel, guests departed for a tour of the Lost Gardens of Helligan. A short drive took guests from the hotel, along a scenic route through the Cornish countryside. Thankfully the weather remained dry and guests were free to explore the breath-taking grounds in the heart of the Cornish countryside. The Gardens contain over 200 acres of beautiful landscapes making it the largest garden restoration in Europe. With a mixture of breath-taking surroundings, history, and wildlife, it proved to be a unique excursion for members.

By mid-afternoon it was time to head back for tea and cake at the St Mawes Hotel – the sister hotel to the Idle Rocks situated just a short stroll away. For rugby fans, the St Mawes Hotel’s Hidden Cinema put on a showing of the Six Nations Rugby games from the early afternoon which was enjoyed in suitable style.

Later in the evening guests congregated back at The Idle Rocks Restaurant for drinks and canapes before enjoying a specially prepared seafood tasting dinner with matching wines. Hosted by David and Karen Richards, guests enjoyed getting to know fellow members whilst trying out the local cuisine.

Sunday
It was an early start for the Formula 1 fans on the tour as they made it to the St Mawes Hidden Cinema for a front row viewing of the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday morning. It proved a thrilling start to the season as Bottas caused an upset and the unique setting made it a memorable start to the Championship for all who attended. After, guests converged back at the Idle Rocks to enjoy a final hearty breakfast.

For some it was time to head back home after a memorable weekend away, but others were to stay on to enjoy the improving weather throughout Sunday. All in all it was an enjoyable weekend for guests, and a great start to the Club’s 2019 tour calendar.
