Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run

Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run Supported by Hiscox
Sunday 6 November, from 7.00am

In the half-light of early dawn on 6 November a group of people dressed in period costume will ceremoniously wave a red flag on the banks of the Serpentine in Hyde Park. After a few moments, and with much glee, they will tear the fluttering flag to pieces. This jovial but historically relevant act will set in motion the annual Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox, while also celebrating the anniversary of the great ‘Emancipation Run’ of 14 November 1896. That run marked the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act which raised the speed limit from 4mph to a rather outrageous 14mph (the average speed limit in London today is often said to be less than that). But in many ways that remarkable run ushered in the era of the modern motor car.

To celebrate the 120th anniversary of the event, more than 400 exquisite examples of pre-1905 vehicles will set off on the annual, epic 60-mile journey from central London to the seafront at Brighton. Goggles, scarves, warm coats and flasks of tea will sustain the ruddy-faced drivers and their passengers on what for some will be an arduous 12-hour trip. For decades, the Veteran Car Run has been a magnet for enthusiasts of veteran motoring, but the tweed, chrome and leather extravaganza on wheels is now also the Sunday high point of seven days of auto-themed events hosted by the Royal Automobile Club.

From the start at Hyde Park to the finish line on Madeira Drive, there are many places for spectators to go and watch the intrepid participants, including an opportunity to join fellow Club members for breakfast at the ‘Club Pub’ and watch the participants as they battle their way to the south coast.
