New Year – New Catalogue!

The Heritage Department has just released a new ‘union’ catalogue which draws together all of the Club’s heritage items.

The Library’s motoring books and periodicals are there as well as committees’ minutes, brochures, reports, the clubhouses’ architectural drawings and personal narratives – to name but a few of item types residing in the Club Archive. Information on the provenance and terms of award for the Club’s trophies, and artists’ details and clubhouse location for the Club’s paintings (and a few other artefacts) are also there or will be added to in due course.

The real beauty of such an approach is that if one is looking for information on the Tourist Trophy say, all of the information on that subject is now collected in one place whatever the format. Putting ‘Tourist Trophy’ into the search box currently returns 41 results. By default, the returns list the Library’s books (and periodicals if applicable) first – where the term ‘Tourist Trophy’ either appears in the title or forms an integral part of the book, eg Raymond Flower’s in the latter case – and is followed then by whatever’s stored in the Club Archive, and in this case the trophy itself. [Being on one’s mettle is wise of course as results for the TT motorcycle race using the equivalent ‘simple’ search term in this instance are necessarily interleaved in the total returned!] Some options for refinement of a search are incorporated and to be used either initially or subsequently; if it’s only images of a particular subject one is after, the results can be tailored accordingly. Clicking on the link to a particular item in the archive gives you more information, for example, on other related folders in the archive which may not have been returned by the original search.

The department will be adding more depth of information to existing items and adding new items over the next two years particularly. Today though we are in a position to offer so much more access to what the Club possesses in its unparalleled history of motoring and motor sport in this country.
