In our first podcast for 2017, produced in association with Motor Sport magazine, we talk to Tom Kristensen – or ‘Mr Le Mans’ – as he is known, in deference to his record-breaking nine wins at the famous 24 Hours race. Tom was our special guest at the Club’s Annual Motoring Dinner at the Pall Mall clubhouse last week, enthralling members and guests with some of the inside stories from his career.
In this podcast, Tom takes us through his early karting days and his rise through the racing formulae, before his move to Japan, which cemented his racing ambitions. From out of the blue, a last-minute phone call in 1997 gave him his first opportunity to race at Le Mans and he took it with both hands, taking a win on his first ever attempt. Endurance sports car racing soon became a magnet for the Dane, growing in reputation on the way to those nine victories, six of which were consecutive, but the podcast isn’t all about Le Mans as Tom reveals the people who influenced him the most, the BTCC driver he’d rather not mention (but did!) as well as answering questions about his favourite cars and tracks.
