Dick Bennetts has helped a stellar list of racing drivers find their way from the junior formulae to become Formula 1 World Champions. More recently, he has moved from open-wheel racing to tin tops and the British Touring Car Championship, taking the 2016 Manufacturer’s crown. Dick joined us at Woodcote Park to share some of the stories that have become legend – the rise of Ayrton Senna and his battles with Martin Brundle in Formula 3, the challenges in European Formula 3 between his West Surrey Racing driver, Mika Hakkinen, and the young Michael Schumacher and the move into touring cars.
With 35 years of experience of racing around the world at the top level, there are also the stories that you don’t tend to hear such as his persistence in this technologically advanced era of using a stopwatch, an odd link to the female pop band, Atomic Kitten and how Ayrton Senna caused him to be sitting in his local pub in Shepperton a day earlier than expected.
