On 12th January 1937 Autocar created a souvenir brochure to commemorate 40 years of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. SMMT was founded in 1902, at a dinner to celebrate S.F.Edge’s Gordon Bennett win.
Frederick Simms, Founder of both our Club and SMMT had organised the International Motor Show, Richmond, in 1899. The show was a critical success and a financial disaster. Following the Richmond Show, Frederick Simms identified the need for manufacturers to unite as a single corporate body, to regulate the conduct of the British motor manufacturing industry and exhibit cars.
Each manufacturer was bound to SMMT by a Bond, which carried a £250 penalty if broken, which was not an insubstantial amount in 1902. The Bond required leading manufacturers to exhibit at the annual SMMT show only.
