Correspondence Match

Since 1983 the Chess Circle has played an annual ‘over the board’ match against the Metropolitan Club with the venue alternating biennially between London and Washington.

Recognising the transatlantic ‘cable’ (or correspondence) chess matches that took place between Great Britain and the USA at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Royal Automobile Club and the Metropolitan Club decided to revive that tradition in the 1980s. The pace of this form of the game is leisurely to say the least; we have just concluded the sixth game in that series – after more than 30 years!

Every move is discussed and agreed upon by club members of each club respectively. The move is then delivered to the other club by post or more likely by email today.
