Solo Atlantic Row 2011

19/08/2011

This December, Club member Tommy Tippetts is embarking on an epic expedition – aiming to become one of the youngest people to ever row the Atlantic solo. At 22, Tommy has entered the Woodvale Challenge, a race that departs from the Canary Islands on 4 December, finishing up to four months later in Barbados.

Most competitors enter as a pair (Ben Fogle and James Cracknell took part in 2005) but Tommy is going it alone. During his time at sea, he’ll be completely self sufficient, carrying everything required to survive the crossing. The expedition is as much a test of mental health as it is physical stamina, and Tommy is currently training to prepare himself for any eventuality.

Tommy is looking to raise money for the mental health charity, Mind. Mind work tirelessly to reduce the stigma of mental illness, as well as provide comfort and support to those who are affected by it. One in four people will experience some form of this in their lifetime, yet the understanding and treatment of these wide-ranging problems is very limited.

Tommy has experienced the pain caused by mental health as a close family member has suffered with these issues, so he is hugely supportive of Mind and keen to raise as much money as possible.
