Stars turn out for Royal Automobile Club Charity Cup
British Racing Drivers’ Club wins charity golf challenge
High profile names from the worlds of motorsport and media turned out to Woodcote Park, this April, for the second annual Charity Cup competition.
Damon Hill, the former Formula 1 World Champion, Derek Warwick, President of the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), TV presenters Steve Rider and Tiff Needell plus many drivers from the world of motor sport including David Brabham, Jackie Oliver, Duncan Tappy, Nicky Grist, Will Stevens and Jason Plato, all competed.
For the second consecutive year, Derek Warwick’s BRDC President’s Team were triumphant, its players Damon Hill, Jason Plato, two-time champion of the British Touring Car Championship and Will Stevens, Formula Renault 3.5 championship racer, completed the Woodcote Park’s Old Course with a score of 92 points (Stableford scoring).
Following three points behind was the Monaco Scramblers Team with renowned sports presenter Steve Rider competing alongside fellow team mates Barrie Baxter, Giles Harper and Darren Wood. In third place with 88 points was the Salon Privé Team, with Andrew Bagley, James Crickmay, Tony Willis and Cliff Powell. Bagley made competition history with a hole in one, celebrating with drinks all round in the evening.
The Charity Cup guest of honour was John Surtees OBE, who remains the only person to have won World Championships on both two and four wheels. Surtees delighted the teams and spectators as he made a little bit of history, riding his 1960 MV Agusta up the Captain’s Drive at the Woodcote Park Estate, then returning down the Drive in his immaculately restored 1970 Surtees TS7 Formula 1 car to rapturous applause.
The day concluded with an auction to raise money for the chosen charities, the Henry Surtees Foundation and BEN. John Surtees then presented the winning team with the Charity Cup as well as awards for Nearest-the-Pin and the Longest Drive hit by Nicky Grist from Motor Sports Association. Both awards were kindly donated by Sky Sports.
David Wilkinson, Chief Executive and Secretary of the Royal Automobile Club: “Our second Charity Cup was another great success, many well-known names from motoring and motor sports took part plus, more importantly, we raised money for two charities, BEN and the Henry Surtees Foundation. We are particularly indebted to John Surtees for his support and presenting the awards and also Sky Sports for their continued support.’
